The first waterproofing gel from the lab: the plasma membrane labeled
If you’re looking for a high-tech, high-performance, and environmentally friendly way to protect your laptop from water damage, you’re in luck.
The first gel from scientists at the University of Illinois has been tested by a number of people who reported it to be as effective as a regular gel.
It works by embedding an adhesive onto a membrane of a material you’re using regularly, which then acts as a sponge to soak up water from the surrounding environment, including your laptop’s internal water pipes.
Water doesn’t soak up the membrane.
It instead drips out of the inside.
The team behind the study, led by Ph.
D. student Tae-Jin Kim, told Mashable that the gel “does what the rest of the gel does, but it does so much better.”
It’s not quite as effective at keeping your laptop water-proof as a gel like Hyperion’s Hypermolecular, which can only absorb water through the surface of the water, but the researchers say they have “seen significant improvements in the amount of water that has been absorbed in our gel over Hyperion.”
The study is still in its early stages, but Kim said he expects it will be approved for testing next year.
The University of California, Davis, said in a statement that the study’s results are exciting and important for water-wasting, outdoor enthusiasts.
“In the future, we hope to use our findings to develop innovative, environmentally friendly and water-efficient solutions for water purification in homes and businesses, which could be used by consumers to keep their laptops and other portable electronics water-tight,” it said.
In fact, the team’s results show that this method is far less effective than Hyperion Hypermolescular gel, which was also tested in its prototype form, according to the university.
Kim, who also is the founder of the lab, told Wired that the researchers are now working on making the gel a “better version” of Hyperion.
The company declined to comment on the new findings, but said it is planning on launching its first product with the gel.
The study’s success comes as many other companies are exploring the technology.
In July, the startup BioLab made headlines by launching its own water-resistance membrane, called a BioFlo.
In the company’s case, the membrane works by coating the inside of a laptop with a polymer that absorbs water when you’re typing or gaming.
BioLab said its membrane “can handle the full spectrum of everyday wear and tear” and can also be easily cleaned with soap and water.
But the company has struggled to get its products into the market.
BioFlo is not the first water-resistant laptop gel.
In June, a company called BioFlo Technologies announced a water-stain resistant version of its GelPad.
That product uses a similar polymer to BioFlo’s, but has been criticized for being too water-sensitive.
The GelPad is a limited edition product that only costs $50, but BioFlo has said it plans to sell a larger version, which it says will be available in September.
BioBallistix’s gel is more water-repellent, but doesn’t absorb as much water as BioFlo, according a BioBallister blog post.
